Control and override of EP brake

The braking systems are the most important element of a locomotive as well as of a carriage. A line of electronic elements and devices following the UIC541-5 standard has been developed by our company, to increase the efficiency of braking of the basic air brake. This concerns the elements for electro-pneumatic brake and the bridging of the safety brake. When sequencing a larger number of carriages, while braking with the basic air brake, the air is being discharged from the brake cylinders of all the carriages through the locomotive. The highest braking effect is on the first carriages, while the last carriages are not braking at all at hat moment. An increased abrasion of the braking elements of the first carriages behind the locomotive and not making use of the maximum braking capacity of the train set takes place. By using the electro-pneumatic brake the air is discharged through the locomotive in the same manner, but at the same time it´s pressure is controlled. If there´s difference between the braking pressures, the air is also discharged through the electromagnetic valve in each of the carriages, which maximizes the reduction of the response time of braking and also maximizes the efficiency of braking of the train set.

While the train set is driving through tunnels and bridges, the bridging of the safety brake function is required. The bridging can be realized only in carriages equipped with an electro-pneumatic brake, where the control electronics control the function of the electro-pneumatic valve. When pulling the safety brake in a carriage, the braking is electronically evaluated and the command to brake is sent to the whole set. This command evaluated in each carriage and an electro-pneumatic braking valve is opened, the carriage starts to brake. The carriages of the whole set are braking with their maximum braking power. The pulling of the safety brake is also indicated to the engine-driver. In case that the stopping of the set would lead to increasing the risk for passengers, the engine-driver has the possibility to bridge the safety brake. By pushing the control element on the board of the locomotive the control electronics of the locomotive are sending the command to bridge. The control electronics of every carriage evaluates this command and closes the electro-pneumatic valve, which stops the braking and the set can continue to a place where stopping is safe.
